Encyclopaedia Galactica: Starship Index

This is an overview of the various starships and other space craft that have been encountered in known space. Notable individual ships are listed in each class. This is not a complete list, and will be expanded as more vessels are documented.

For a general overview of starship capabilities and design principles, see Encyclopaedia Galactica: Starships.

Emissariate of Bolusca

Heavy Cruiser (CA)

The heavy cruiser is the largest starship in use by the Emissariate Fleet.

Galactic Survey Cruiser (GSC)

A modified version of the older Avian class heavy cruiser, the GSC lacks the primary particle beam weapon of a CA but is still an effective combat unit. The primary hull space that would house the particle beam is taken up by science labs and enhanced sensor suites.

Strike Cruiser (CS)

A light cruiser optimised for planetary assault, carrying a large complement of marines and multiple landing craft.

Nebula Class Cruiser

The Nebula class is an anomaly in Boluscan ship design, being far smaller and less powerful than any other main-line Fleet vessel. It was designed as a versatile ship that could be used for scouting, fast transportation, and troop landings, as well as light combat duties, but the Fleet found it underpowered and comissioned very few of them. Its size, speed, and versatility made it ideal for Star Guard use, however, and with some modifications (primarily to the internal crew spaces) it has become the primary starship type in Star Guard use, to such an extent that most people refer to the class simply as "Star Guard cruisers".

Pulsar Class Scout

The fastest regular starship class in the Fleet, this small, lightly armed vessel typically operates in a number of different roles. It is the only regular ship class in Fleet use to have a cloaking device installed. A number of scouts are operated by the Star Guard as a faster alternative to their Nebula class cruisers, for smaller teams to use.

Typhoon Class Light Carrier

This anomaly in ship design carries eight Type V strike fighers while still acting as a moderately armed combat unit. In practice, the vulnerable fighters serve as little more than an expensive distraction in a pitched space battle.

System Gunboats

A gunboat refers to any large (starship-size) space vessel without hyperspace capability. They are used in planetary defence and local law-enforcement roles. Because they don't need to accommodate a hyperdrive, they usually have a better main-drive performance and more powerful weapons than a starship of equivalent size.

Diplomatic Cruiser

The unarmed Muffin class cruisers are used exclusively for executive passenger transport.

Fleet Priority Transport

A small frieghter intended for a variety of military logistics purposes, with a significantly lower carrying capacity than a heavy freighter but able to match the hyperspace speed of main-line Fleet units.

Fleet Tender

A transport vessel outfitted to resupply, refuel, and repair Fleet vessels in deep space.

Civilian Starships

Heavy Freighter

The most common civilian vessel seen in the Emissariate, the slow and lumbering heavy freighter carries bulk cargo between worlds. Heavy freighters are not designed for planetary landing.

Supply Freighter

A light transport vessel, not as ubiquitous as the Heavy Freighter but often seen carry high-priority shipments between core worlds.

Star Liner

A general term for a large and prestigious passenger transport. Exact class specifications will vary.

Small Passenger Transport

One of the smallest hyperspace-capable vessels, the SPT is barely larger than a heavy shuttle, and can carry a small number of passengers in cramped conditions. It sees some use in ferrying people between the Core Worlds, but is impractical for use over the large distances that separate the outer planets.

Heavy Armed Transport

This vessel has no official classification, and only one example has been observed in the Emissariate, being used as transport for a mercenary group.

Small Colony Transport

An old class of passenger vessel, originally designed for colonist transport. It will carry approximately 80 people in cramped, spartan conditions, plus a sizeable amount of cargo.

Deep Space Tug

A small vessel that can have a variable number of standard cargo modules attached, giving it great versatility at the expense of poor hyperspace performance.

Private Yacht

A generic class of small, luxury vessel, typically owned by the very wealthy.

Krai Empire

Battlecruiser

The largest and deadliest standard ship design in known space, classes of battlecruiser range from 1000–2000 metres long.

Light Raider

A small, fast, lightly armed vessel designed to operate independently deep in enemy space.

Assault Boat

A small vessel mainly used to carry out ground attacks and land troops on a planetary surface.

Science Cruiser

A small scout vessel. The designation "science cruiser" allows it limited entry to Emissariate space under the terms of the Emissariate-Krai Peace Treaty and Aarghs World Protocols.

Kingdom of High Illona

Royal Yacht

A fast, lightly armed transport used by members of the royal family.

Scout

Possibly the fastest ships in known space are High Illonan scout ships. They are lightly armed, and unusually for scout ships they don't use cloaks, sacrificing those systems in favour of increased drive capability. One is currently in unofficial service with the Boluscan Star Guard.

Unique or Experimental Vessels

Unclassified Small Transport X-7

An experimental design created by Eniac of the Star Guard, using a very fast but limited-range hyperspace drive.

Unclassified Cutter X-6

An experimental cutter with the ability to phase through the hull of a starship. Origin unknown, but formerly used by Plunderers and now in the possession of the Star Guard.

Automata

The mobile base of the Mechsmith. Probably the single largest and most powerful vessel in known space.

Arboreal Worldship

A hollowed-out asteroid with hyperspace capability, housing the surviving members of the Arboreal species who fled their home system before catastrophe ended it.

The Planet Eater

A massive vessel of unknown origin, capable of destroying entire planets. Destroyed by the Star Guard in Cy.1602.

Small Craft

The designations given here are specific to the Emissariate, but all fleets have equivalent types.

Standard Cutter

A light, unarmed, surface-to-orbit vessel, in common civilian as well as Fleet use. The interior can be configured for either passenger or cargo transportation, or for a mixture of the two. Most larger Fleet ships have standard bays for carrying one or more cutters.

Heavy Shuttle

Designed to ferry bulk cargo between a planet's surface and an orbital freighter. The heavy shuttle has approximately double the cargo capacity of the standard cutter.

Armed Heavy Shuttle

A rare variant, this is the result of adding a forward-firing pulse cannon to a basic heavy shuttle hull. Rather pointless in most respects.

Shuttle Pod

A small craft used for transportation between ships in space and from surface to orbit. Half the size of a standard cutter, it is carried by starships too small to incorporate cutter bays.

Type V Strike Fighter

This fast, lightly armed, single-seat fighter is most often employed by planetary defence forces in orbital operations. They are rarely seen in Fleet use, though they are carried by the Typhoon Class carriers.

Lifeboat / Life Pod

The smallest vessels in regular use, the lifeboat or life pod is a very basic vessel with limited capabilites, designed to keep a number of crew alive or get them safely to a planet's surface in the case of their ship being lost.
