Description
Height: 165cm (5'5"); Weight: 68kg (150lbs).
Urtis Onner is of standard Boluscan stock, unremarkable though notably shorter than most Boluscans. In his "wolf" form, his jaws and nose are elongated and his canine teeth grow into long fangs. His eyes take on a red glow, with slitted pupils. His fingernails elongate into a claw-like configuration.
History
Onner was born on the Boluscan core world A/B-L, and on demonstrating an intelligence far above baseline Boluscans he was channelled into the advanced scientific education system. He excelled at his studies, and graduated to become one of the foremost biochemists on A/B-L, with his talents in high demand by the corporate conglomerates that dominated the planet. He spent several years working for a number of employers, before accepting a fateful offer from the medical giant 4-Care.
At 4-Care, his research included the study of the wolf-like creatures of the planet Fe-Rall. The Fe-Rall exhibited the ability to regenerate entire organs and heal near-fatal injuries, and Onner's team was tasked with deriving a serum that could mimic that ability in Boluscans.
In the course of his research, Onner uncovered evidence of 4-Care's corporate malpractice and unethical behaviour, including illegal testing of dangerous processes on sentient beings. He confronted his superiors with this evidence, but instead of opening an investigation as he expected they would, he found that they were fully aware and complicit in the illegal behaviour. To ensure his findings remained buried, corporate security was ordered to take Onner to his laboratory and kill him, staging the death to look like a laboratory accident.
Fatally injured and left for dead, in his dying seconds Onner made a desperate gamble: he injected himself with his untested experimental Fe-Rall serum. Miraculously, this prototype serum not only regenerated his body, it also gifted him with greatly enhanced physical abilities. Using his newfound powers, he was able to bring the corporate criminals to justice. He also realised that he could refine the serum to control his transformations into his "Feral Wolf" form, and armed with this ability he applied for membership in the Star Guard academy. After a short training cycle, he was accepted for full Star Guard membership, and has served with distinction ever since.
After cycles of regular use of his serum, he realised it had a serious side effect: prolonged use was slowly destroying his intellect. Initially keeping this to himself, he eventually confided in his fellow Star Guard after they began to notice changes in his behaviour. Despite their urging, he refused to stop using the serum, confident that he could perfect it and remove the side effect. As time went on, however, he simply lost the mental capacity to do this. Onner had no immediate family, and so nobody outside the Star Guard had need to know about his condition. It remained an open secret within the Star Guard (though not automatically divulged to new members, who often just assumed he had behavioural issues) but was never spoken of to anyone outsde the Star Guard.
No longer the genius that he once was, Feral Wolf remains committed to the heroic ideals of the Star Guard and to serving the Emissariate to the full extent of his abilities.
Psychological Profile
Once a highly developed genius, Onner's intellect has been reduced to that of an adolescent. Tests conducted by Enniac have determined that his mind has stabilised at that level and will not degrade further despite his continued use of the Fe-Rall serum, but there appears to be no way to return his mind to what it once was. Onner retains his full memories and knowledge, he simply lacks the intellect to use that knowledge as he once did.
Outwardly, Onner has adapted remarkably well to his diminished state. Although he is aware that he once was but is no longer a genius, he accepts what he is now, without revealing any feelings of anger or grief. Only Psi-Girl knows his inner feelings, and she does not divulge them to anyone.
Urtis Onner was a highly principled man, committed to the ideals of truth and justice, and to helping those in need. He retains these ideals even in his diminished mental state. He has always been somewhat naive, quick to trust others and take their words at face value, a trait which has often caused him trouble both before and since he became a Star Guard member. With his current child-like mental outlook, this also leads him to be outspokenly honest, a trait which has made it a de facto rule in the Star Guard that he is not to be sent on missions of a diplomatic nature.
There is only one significant difference in Onner's personality when he takes his serum to become Feral Wolf: in stressful situations he can struggle to keep control of his temper and know when to stop fighting. His committment to sentient life has prevented him ever going too far when in such a feral rage, but there have been times when he has walked very close to the line.
Onner has a loyal devotion to Psi-Girl of the Star Guard. This began as a mild unrequited infatuation, and as his mental state deteriorated it has developed into a relationship that some of the more unkind Star Guard describe as a pet and his owner. Psi-Girl does not encourage this devotion, but neither does she attempt to put a stop to it. The situation is complicated by the Star Guard leaders typically pairing Feral Wolf and Psi-Girl on missions, as they know she can most easily control him when his feral temper gets the better of him.
Skills and Abilities
Onner was once a brilliant biochemist, but he has long since lost that ability.
Onner takes an artifical serum to transform into Feral Wolf. The transformations last approximately one hour, and tend to leave him physically exhausted so he needs a period of rest before transforming again. The serum was originally injected into his bloodstream, but in its current form it is taken orally. The effects manifest within seconds of taking it. He typically carries a single dose of the serum on his person. The formulation of the serum is stored, under strict security protocols, in the Star Guard headquarters replicator banks, ensuring that he can obtain more of it even though he no longer understands how to make it himself. The current formulation of the serum has no effect on most other Boluscans, though a small minority with a particular genetic make-up can use it, for example the young Feral Kid and the super-villain Feral Fox.
In Feral Wolf form, his strength and agility are boosted far above Boluscan standard. His senses of sight, smell, and hearing are all heightened to super-Boluscan levels. He gains the ability to rapidly heal after suffering major injuries.
Feral Wolf has trained extensively with Martial, the Star Guard's unarmed combat expert, and developed a unique fighting style that complements his strength and agility.
