History
Aarma Indeen was born and raised on Bolusca and had an unremarkable childhood. Her latent psionic talents emerged early in her adolescence, when she used telepathic abilities she did not consciously know she possessed to "take" knowledge from her peers, and moved from being a mediocre student to ranking consistently at the top of her class. Psionic talent is not unknown among Boluscans, but it is rare enough that it was not identified through her teenage cycles. Only in her 20th cycle, when her university entrance results were flagged as anomalous, was the truth uncovered.
Once her talent was recognised, she was quickly pushed towards a military career. At that point in her life, she had no clear idea of what her future path should be, just that she wanted to be a useful member of society. So, without putting too much thought into the choice, she accepted a place in the Fleet Academy, where she pursued typical military studies for two cycles before being fast-tracked into Fleet Intelligence, which was the path planned out for her as soon as she was flagged as a psionic.
She served as an Intelligence operative for almost three cycles, but became more and more disillusioned with the nature of the work she was performing. She had gone into military service naively thinking she was working for the greater good of the Emissariate, but soon found that "good" in Fleet Intelligence terms was a very grey concept. After one particular mission that she had strong moral objections to, she confronted her superior officers and told them she wanted to quit. She was told, in no uncertain terms, that one does not simply walk out of Fleet Intelligence. But she was prepared for this response, and her back-up plan was to go to the Star Guard and tell their leader, Singularity at the time, everything pertaining to her situation.
Singularity used his considerable influence with the Emissariate Council to extricate Indeen from her obligations to Fleet Intelligence, and offered her a place in the Star Guard, which she accepted without hesitation.
Due to Indeen's military background, she skipped the probationary period in Star Guard Academy and was made a full Star Guard member immediately. She has now served as an active Star Guard for more than ten cycles, and is considered one of the most experienced and reliable members. She has led numerous mission teams, but has never been elected Star Guard leader, despite it being one of her greatest unfulfilled ambitions. In Cy. 1602, Singularity made her his deputy leader after Eniac suffered a psychotic episode which left him no longer fit for the deputy position.
Psychological Profile
Aarma Indeen struggled to make friends during her adolescence, due to a general uneasiness she caused in those around her when she unknowingly and subconsciously used her latent telepathic talent. She was considered a "freak" by other adolescents. This caused her to become withdrawn and introverted during her military training, traits which were only reinforced during her career in Fleet Intelligence, where the environment inevitably fosters feelings of isolation and paranoia.
On joining the Star Guard she finally felt she was in a group of like-minded sentients, and she tried her utmost to "fit in" and become everyone's "best friend". Unfortunately, this approach backfired, as openness didn't come naturally to her, and her comrades often felt she was being forced and insincere in her approaches. Equally unfortunately, Indeen's social inexperience meant she was unable to pick up on their responses, and she does not use her telepathic abilities to help her in these matters. She is, therefore, genuinely convinced that everyone in the Star Guard likes her, when the truth is that most of them find her slightly tiresome. In all her years of active service, she has probably only had three genuine friends: Bouncing Being (who can't help but be everyone's friend), Immateria (who shared many of Indeen's socially awkward traits), and Feral Wolf (with whom she shares a relationship that nobody really understands). She had a brief romantic relationship with Pyrokinetic, but then so has everybody.
Indeen is scrupulous about not using her mind-reading abilties on any of her Star Guard comrades. In general, she avoids reading any mind unless it is absolutely required. When required, though, she is fiercely determined in the pursuit of her duties and will use the full weight of her power on those she thinks deserve it.
She strongly believes in the sanctity and equality of sentient life. She is dedicated to the ideals of the Emissariate (though she is deeply suspicious of parts of the power structure, particularly the Fleet hierarchy), and she is fiercely loyal to the Star Guard.
Skills and Abilities
Psi-Girl possesses several psionic abilites. She can transmit her thoughts to any sentient mind within her line of sight, and transmit to any sentient with whom she is familiar over planetary distances. In both cases, the recipient will be aware she is initiating contact and can voluntarily refuse. Once contact is established, telepathic communication is two-way, though thoughts must be voluntarily transmitted and neither party can forcibly take information from the other's brain. Psi Girl can maintain connections with multiple willing minds in this way.
Psi-Girl can also forcibly invade another sentient mind, though this takes an effort of willpower and can only be attempted with someone in her line of sight or whose position she can visualise very well (on the other side of a closed door, for example). This mental invasion allows her to extract any thoughts or memories from the victim, or to take complete control of the victim's body for a period of time. Due to the concentration required, she can rarely do this with more than one target simultaneously.
With further concentration, Psi-Girl can cause her victim to experience the sensation of pain, or even shut down their consciousness entirely. Sentients with their own psionic abilities have some resistance to this, but very few sentients have psionic talents as strong as Psi-Girl's.
Although she must concentrate to use most of her abilties, she also has an "always on" ability to subconsciously detect very strong negative thoughts directed towards her or those in her company. This can give her advance warning of physical danger, though it is not completely reliable, and will not warn her of, for example, a non-sentient bomb about to explode.
In addition to her psionic talents, Psi-Girl is a competent unarmed combatant who trains regularly. She is a qualified starship pilot. She also has a good knowlegde of military matters and espionage techniques, due to her time in Fleet Academy and Fleet Intelligence.
Psi-Girl uses a standard Star Guard personal flight unit, built into the belt she wears as part of her uniform. The belt also contains a rapid-deployment personal environment suit.
