Nearly blew it today. Never underestimate the enemy. Stupid. Getting old.
Start at the beginning.
Arrived LA early AM, plenty of time (ha). Left Sara scouting while I looked up old contacts. Should have expected Krai. We know that they can track powers as well as we can. Overconfidence. Fight in Phoenix went to my head. Felt like the old days when we could beat anyone, forgot that we don't have that stuff any more but the K still do.
Arranged that Sara would meet targets, she's their own age, thought it would put them at ease. Also left me time for a bit of research.
Sara found all the targets, but at the same time as the Krai found them. It was touch and go. We were lucky, could have been a lot worse, at least we all got out. Sara had a busy night, rounded up all three targets, plus another she stumbled across. Managed to get them together, keep them alive and contact me for a rendezvous. I got there in the nick of time. I counted six Krai, the most I've seen in one place (since the last invasion). If not for the kids I would have tried to take them on, got some solid corpses to dissect. Maybe a good job I didn't, six is a lot, probably would have got my butt shot off. Still don't know what weapons they are using, still don't know if Krai weapons will ever work again on Earth (but note that their holograms and tracking gear works). Too many unknows.
I still need to debrief Sara, I have no info on the group she picked up. No-one trusts anyone. Who can blame them? They nearly got killed by "werewolves" (Krai) and I can't give them any decent answers yet. Not how I wanted things to start.
These are my first impressions:
Fred: Going to be tough. A bit of a whiner, but I'm trying to make allowances. With us because he's scared. At least it's an honest reason. Could have trouble with the law: I think the Krai killed a couple of people while tracking him. Need to sort out asap.
Chi Yun: The only power I've seen so far, I'm guessing she's a shapechanger (but I only got a quick look).
Jerome: Odd one, Sara found him at a psychiatrist's office, but he's not a doctor (he says). Might be a mental patient, just what I need. British accent, seems the best in a scrap. Only problem - the guy's too old, nobody over 21 should have powers. Still, Sara "found" him and I trust Sara (and the K also thought he was the right target). This needs following up.
James: The oddball. Sara says she wasn't looking for him, he just turned up and helped her when a Krai was on her tail. (She didn't need help, it was only one Krai forgodssake, but she wouldn't have found him if she didn't need him. Waiting to see how this pans out.) The kid wears a Major Democracy uniform. Claims that MD was/is his father. I'm reluctant to test him on the point - not sure if I want to know the answer. The age could match for a son, but I think I would have known about it. The costume may or may not be genuine. It's a spot-on copy, but that wouldn't be too hard to fake. I'm more worried about the shield.
So this is where we stand now. We're camped at the lake, I'm letting the kids think over the situation, made the sales pitch, etc.
Plans for tomorrow: Take as many as will come. Need to drop into Luey's, pick up supplies, get the window fixed on the RV. After that, head up to Washington. Hide out at the beach house while we get our heads together.
Plans for now: Sleep. If I can.
